I just received the unit today, but I think that I have spent enough time with it to get a good feel for the unit.

The unit came configured with a P8400 Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3 Gigs or RAM, 160 Gig Hard Drive, Bluetooth and the Intel Wireless N card.

I opted out of the webcam and the turbo memory that is also available. I figured I can pick up a webcam if I ever felt I needed one. The optional turbo memory is technology that is still too much in its infancy and would be more headache than it's worth. Key question: Why would Lenovo offer software on their website to disable turbo memory if there weren't problems with it?

One thing that I have noticed from most of the reviews on the web is that often the reviews (and critics of this laptop) spend more time comparing the laptop to other Thinkpads rather than similar notebooks made by competitors. Having worked on a T60 for the last 2 years, I can see how it can be hard to overlook the differences between a T60 and a SL400.

The SL400 is noticeably lighter than my T60, but surprisingly enough the SL400 nearly matched the T60 in size when open. Part of the reason why the SL400 is about the same size of the T60 is because of its very thick base. The base of the unit is about a 3/8 of an inch higher than the T60.

I selected the reflective screen over the matt screen. One thing I noticed with my T60 is that the matt screen seemed to mute colors and the screen does not appear to be as brilliant as my wife's HP and other notebooks with non-matt screens. This was a good choice. The screen on this laptop is VERY nice.

Other than a one minute boot cycle, this laptop is very fast and should effortlessly cut through most business applications and developer based apps like Visual Studio or Netbeans.

Lenovo has outfitted this laptop with nice and easy to use software. Creating rescue discs were very easy (A must for any laptop or computer you buy). Connecting to my secured wireless network was equally as easy.

I had to fish around the web to figure out how to activate the Bluetooth unit on the laptop. I'm sure its in the manual that I didn't read. It isn't like me not to at least take a cursory look through the manual. After learning that I need to hit function F5, I was in business. I was able to FTP a file via Bluetooth to my other Bluetooth enabled T60 in a matter of minutes. This was the first time I had ever used Bluetooth, so I consider the test a success.

One nice thing about this laptop is that it didn't come with a bunch of unneeded software installed. There is a trail version of Office and MacAfee Antivirus. I installed my own on the laptop.
I noticed from the onset was the CD/DVD drive was extremely noisy at first. It seemed to quiet down after some use. The oils in the motor were probably not worked in yet.

Over all, I was extremely impressed with this laptop when compared to its more consumer based peers. The build is very sturdy, but it doesn't quite have the feel of a T series Thinkpad. The keyboard is nice with zero flex and is very comfortable to type on. I am happy with my purchase, so far.

It was a tossup between this computer and a similar HP. One thing that kept me from purchasing the HP was that my wife's HP laptop has been back for warranty work 3 times in the year and a half we've owned it. I have also worked with a number of HP laptops before getting my T60 Thinkpad and was never really impressed with their durability.

This laptop may not be a T60, but if its anything like its more expensive siblings, it is going to be a hard unit to kill. I recommend looking at some of the Lenovo videos on Youtube. Thinkpads have special channeling built into the keyboard to protect the computer from spilled drinks such as coffee. Also, these units have an accelerometer that sense whether or not they have been dropped and quickly park the hard drive to avoid loss of data and damage to the drive. The SL400 does not have the internal roll cage the more expensive Thinkpads offer, but this is also a consumer/small business focused device.
